Some of the best gadgets I’ve tested are the simplest gadgets I’ve tested. And Netatmo’s Smart Carbon Monoxide Alarm is up there with the simplest. It’s also a crucial safety device if you have gas appliances.
My house is heavily reliant on gas. From the boiler to the burners on my kitchen hob, we rely on it daily and the threat of a malfunction causing deadly carbon monoxide to be released is something gas users have to learn to live with.
It’s also something to consider if you have an open fire of a log burner. And, guess what, I’ve got one of those too.

The risks can be mitigated by using a simple monitoring alarm. You could quite easily pick one up for around £15 – I’ve seen them in Aldi recently – or you could spend a far less palatable £89.99 on a smart version by Netatmo. What justifies the premium? As with many things these days, the key is in the word “smart”.
Firstly, it links to your home’s WiFi. There’s no hub, just a very easy connection process on a smartphone app. This means, straight away, you can be alerted to any presence of Carbon Monoxide with an instant notification.
While normal carbon monoxide detectors have a piercing alarm built in, that can be heard around the house – as does the Netatmo one, incidentally – that’s not going to help you if you’re out shopping.
The smartness doesn’t stop there though. The Netatmo’s battery is stated to last around 10 years – that’s pretty standard, but an additional feature this little device boasts is a self-testing facility. If there’s a problem, it’ll let you know.
Installing it is a doddle, the app walks you through it all, and mounting it on a wall is just a case of attaching a plastic base, then the alarm unit locks on, switching it on in the process.
Linking it up to WiFi – usually the complicated bit – happened instantly, and it now just sits a few feet from my boiler cupboard, ready to let me know if I’m in any danger.
It’s really hard to find any fault with the Netatmo Smart Carbon Monoxide Alarm. I guess the price is enough to put some people off, especially when you consider some households might need more than one.
But there is a deal available if you buy more than one, and Netatmo will also bundle one in with a smart smoke alarm. I haven’t tested one of those, but if it works even slightly as well as the carbon monoxide alarm, it’ll be a cracking little product.
